Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all contact and competitive roller derby activity has been suspended. Please join us for recreational and fitness-based skating at our new outdoor facility. Check back as pandemic restrictions are relaxed.
Similar to their adult counterparts, the Juniors have a multi-tier training system. After attending orientation, junior skaters begin training to learn the basics of roller skating and the fundamentals to the sport of roller derby under the guidance of some of the best coaches the sport has to offer. A monthly skills assessment is held to determine the appropriate learning level for each individual skater. Guidance is provided to ensure valuable feedback that will help each skater succeed. Coaches encourage skaters to practice at home whenever possible and suggest on and off skate drills that will promote muscle memory and supplement the training they receive during practice.
Junior Bootcamp Structure
Beginner level covers the basic skills needed to learn the sport of roller derby. These techniques will become the foundation blocks to develop new skaters into great roller derby players. Stride, posture, jumps, and plow stops are among the skills juniors learn in their beginner classes.
The intermediate level is when a skater really starts to develop agility and speed on the track, as well as play some roller derby, and practice full-body contact. Skaters learn different techniques for blocking and assisting, partner awareness, backward skating, and many other skills. When skaters have fulfilled their requirements in this level, they will be initiated as a full-fledged Junior Derby United Skater and be put in the pool of team skaters to be considered for public bouts!
