I love roller derby because it combines hard work and fun. It’s also a mix of violence, pain, sweat, tears, yelling, laughter, and bodies being sacrificed! An inside joke we have on our team is, “Sacrifice Your Body”. We all just think its so funny because that’s literally what you are doing while we play. Even though we leave marks on one another’s bodies occasionally, and leave handprints and bruises: I ask myself, “why do I still love roller derby?” It’s just crazy, five years ago I didn’t even know what roller derby was. I just wish I would have known sooner so I could have played longer. I have been playing roller derby for 4 years now. I love it!
Another reason why I love roller derby is, because when you are on your skates you can feel the wind in your face. It’s great to do something different and not doing the same thing everyday. Honestly, it is really empowering and crazy, the strength that we have.
Derby is also my stress relief. When I play, everything else goes away. It has helped get me through a crazy couple of years. Roller derby has helped me find my true calling. It helped me find what I really am passionate about.
One thing I love doing, is telling my friends about roller derby practice. One of the questions I get is, “Why do you do it, don’t you get hurt?” Another is” But your so small, don’t you get scared?”. I was telling one of my close friends Ana about it,and she thoughtit was so cool, but she said, “I can’t skate, how would I be able to play?” I was so surprised when she said that. On the inside I was like, “Oh My God No Way.” But on the outside I was like wow somebody is interested in roller derby?
The movie “Whip It” is one of my favorite movies. It doesn’t have that much roller derby in it, but for the moral of the story is figuring out what you love and go for it, no matter what anyone else thinks. For example, most people don’t even want to see as a “real sport”. Many people that play roller derby never be athletic or even played (organized) sports before, like me or just did a little bit here and there. I did it because it was fun and loved it after they tried it. I want more girls and boys to participate in our sport. There are many great roller derby influencers to be inspired by like Miracle Whips and Mr. Testosterone.
Our team is the main reason why I love roller derby even more, we just recently merged teams with Derby United. I wasn’t okay with it at first but I realized that, that team wanted us. Everyone on the team is different in our unique ways. X-rae knows how to make everyone happy and laugh when their down. Speedy always makes sure everyone is okay, which I’m very thankful for. Candy Skull shows everyone how to have a good time when practices and games are hard. Bandit one of the funniest kids that I know, I love how hard he works hard to become a better roller derby player. Skittles always making everyone laugh with her funny jokes and funny dances. Whiplash showing everyone how to do things correctly so we can become better players and be better as a team. Bubble one of the new members on the Tremors has been such a big help working and communicating with the whole team. Since we merged our teams it helped us grow as a team so much and that’s why I love roller derby.
