Over the weekend of May 19-21, 2017, the Arizona Derby Dames hosted the 10th annual national banked track roller derby tournament, Battle on the Bank: War in the Desert. The Wildfires, Juvenile Dollinquents, and many of their friends and families packed up their skates and finest turquoise attire and road-tripped over to Phoenix for an action-packed and fun-filled weekend in the desert heat!
Friday saw some exciting victories for both teams. The Wildfires opened the tournament with a 235-0 shutout against Florida’s Deadly Rival Roller Derby. Next, the Juvenile Dollinquents took on the Arizona Minor Assaults, coming out victorious with a score of 149-61. The Wildfires then took on the Arizona Hot Shots in a nail-biting barnburner of a game. After thirty minutes of intensely competitive play and multiple overtime jams, the Wildfires won the game by a close seven points with a final score of 93-86!
On Saturday morning, the juniors and adults were treated to a delicious brunch by some of the juniors and their parents! Enjoying the homemade cooking of Knockers and Scissors (two of the San Diego league’s most dedicated skaters and volunteers), leaguemates watched footage and re-charged for a day of tough games ahead. First, the Dollinquents took on the two-time reigning champions — the Tilted Thunder Peeps — and enjoyed a solid victory with a final score of 139-38, securing them a spot in Sunday’s championship game. The Wildfires then took on the five-time reigning champions, the Los Angeles Derby Dolls Ri-ettes. The final score was 120-59 in favor of the Ri-ettes, but the Wildfires had nevertheless secured a spot in the semifinal game and a chance to take on the Ri-ettes again on Sunday!
On Sunday morning, the Wildfires faced a Friday re-match against the Arizona Hot Shots. The teams exchanged lead multiple times — the Wildfires ended the first quarter down by 16 points, the second up by 13, and the third up by 17, but ultimately ended the game with a final score of 164-132 in favor of the Hot Shots. Though this game ended their Battle on the Bank journey, the Wildfires were proud of their 3rd place finish after fighting so hard against such an evenly-matched team, and were stoked to cheer on the Dollinquents in their fight to secure the #1 national ranking!
That afternoon, the Juvenile Dollinquents took on the Arizona Minor Assaults in the championship game. Also an incredibly close game that saw multiple lead changes, the Dollinquents came out victorious with a final score of 194-138 — making the San Diego Juvenile Dollinquents the #1 ranked junior banked track team in the nation!
The Dolls are so incredibly proud of both of their travel teams for all of their hard work all season, pushing through setbacks and injuries, and growing through victories and losses alike. The San Diego Derby Dolls want to extend a heartfelt congratulations to the Los Angeles Derby Dolls Ri-ettes on their sixth consecutive Battle on the Bank Championship and a huge amount of gratitude to the Arizona Derby Dames for hosting such an organized, smooth, and fun tournament! The Derby Dolls also want to wish a special Happy Birthday to Dollinquent Ryl’d Up and Wildfire Stiletto, whose birthdays we celebrated over the weekend. The Derby Dolls of all ages had a fantastic time and cannot wait to see all of their sister leagues again in the near future!
