Adult Orientation / Bootcamp Recruitment

Want to know more about the path to becoming a roller derby player? San Diego Derby United and SoCal Derby have joined together to offer you banked, flat, women’s, men’s, and junior’s roller derby in one convenient central San Diego location.

At our facility, you have the option to participate in the sport of roller derby in the way that suits you best.  You may start as a new skater in the Bootcamp program, designed to train incoming members from the ground up, transfer in from another league to play on the competitive teams, or learn how to become a referee. Whether you want to skate flat, banked, or strive to dominate both as a bitraxual skater, you can practice with the Derby United teams all week long.

Empower yourself to take the first step and attend orientation.

What to Expect at Orientation

Our Bootcamp coaches will introduce themselves by reviewing our league history, goals and achievements, and they’ll go over some basic FAQs that most new skaters ask.  Orientation will include:

  •    Personal stories from current league members about their diverse range of experiences
  •    What skaters can expect from becoming a member of this fast-growing sport
  •    An overview of scheduling, gear, competition levels
  •    How Bootcamp graduates get recruited to a bouting team
  •    Open questions and answers session
  •    Demonstration by league level skaters

Before Orientation concludes, you will see live roller derby in action. There will be explanations of the basics of the game, including the different positions, timing, and structure of a roller derby bout. There will be coaches on hand to answer questions as the action is happening.

Membership Details

Derby United Adult Bootcamp skaters are charged a $90/month membership fee.  This fee includes all eligible Bootcamp practices and Open Track.

All new skaters join through the Bootcamp program. Transfer, returning and experienced derby skaters, may sidestep Bootcamp with a skills evaluation. Once enrolled, prospective members will receive their membership free of charge for the remainder of the month during which they attended orientation and filled out paperwork. All memberships are paid via autopay on the online Member Portal on the 1st of every month. Bootcamp membership is month-to-month and may be canceled at any time (with 2 business days notice for cancellation to take effect). Details may be found in the Roller Derby 360 Membership Agreement.

No experience is needed to join San Diego Derby United. There are no try-outs for Bootcamp. Just come to orientation and hear all about how the program works.

  • Excuse the tryptophan! November’s Member of the Month is Hannibal Lextor!🎉 Hannibal Lexter, is truly one of a kind - as a skater, a supporter, and a friend.
Coming to us from Monterey Bay and now skating on the Socal Cuttlefish and Derby United Sparks. All of her teammates can attest to her dedication, positive attitude, and willingness to try anything. In short, being on the track with her is amazing.  Lex pushes herself and others to be the absolute best they can be which is an invaluable trait when learning the complexities of this amazing sport and community we are all a part of.
She is strong, kind, determined, reliable, and an incredibly hard worker. Lex unfortunately suffered from some health issues, but you could never call them "set-backs" in Lex's case - weeks after being in the hospital found Lex out and supporting her teams and league. She helped pull weeds at our new facility, she sanded benches for our new track, and is calling local businesses to ask about fundraising. The Kraken had a great experience while travelling to a tournament in Oregon helped in no small part by Lex's skill in bench coaching!

  • Today, we are thankful to every single person, skater, member, friend, family, and volunteer that has helped Derby United make a dream become a reality. It has taken us long and it has taken many to get where we are and we are truly thankful to every one of them! #onwardandupward #dirttoderby #thankful
  • On this Trans Day of Remembrance, we are taking a moment to mourn the murders and celebrate the lives of the 311 trans lives we’ve lost this year. We will not stand for trans bigotry and violence, and we stand united behind the trans community.
We must do better. We must work every day to ensure safety for trans and gender non-confirming lives and create a space of inclusion, empowerment, and love. To those we’ve lost - rest in power. To those still here - we stand and fight with you.
Resources and information regarding the LGBT community and how you can be an ally can be found at @lgbtcenter and @trevorproject. Supporting the queer skating community starts with following @queerskatealliance and @bipocwhoskate.
  • This weekend two of our San Diego Derby United / SoCal skaters will be participating in the We Are Nation: A Game Without Borders Exhibition Bout, at the 2019 Women's Flat Track Roller Derby International Championships.

While these two skaters prefer to play on the same team, Isabelle Ringer and Margaret Bleed are proud to be able to represent teams that unite people across borders and celebrate the resilience of marginalized peoples in the face of oppression.

Please join us to cheer on our teammates on Sat 11/16 at 8:30 AM PST (11:30 AM EST). The game is available to watch for FREE on the Twitch app. More information at WFTDA.TV.
